Civilization 6 players shared favorite "clinically insane" ways to play the game

Since the release date for Civilization 7 is unknown, fans of Civilization 6 continue to find creative and chaotic ways to extend gameplay beyond the standard options. In a recent thread on Reddit, the community shared their favorite "clinically insane" ways of playing Civ 6.

As expected, many use mods and custom settings to sow chaos. One gamer mentioned making the AI win by clearing obstacles for AI-civilizations:

Forcing the ai to win is kind of funny. right now i’m playing a game as the ottomans where i’m allied with gilgamesh and declaring joint wars on nearby civs. i destroy their walls, encampments, and armies and patiently wait for gilgamesh to take the cities for himself until he captures the capital. i will force the ai to win a domination victory.

Another creates maps filled with the maximum number of playable factions, setting up a free-for-all battle. Yet another, when bored, plays on a special custom map:

I have a custom map saved that is six islands, they're all surrounded by mountains with one entrance to the global ocean. I try to win domination victories on it sometimes when I'm bored.

Some set challenges for themselves to increase difficulty. One player constantly wars with all the world's civilizations at once. Another refuses to build vital infrastructure, filling their empire with useless Wonders.

Reddit users also devise scenarios impossible without special mods and settings, like a popular variant connecting all seven seas, where normally you can't dig canals through hills. Mods remove such restrictions, opening the way for grand engineering projects.

While some experiments end poorly, there are not many alternatives to Civ. So, it's about finding the right personal challenge while waiting for the next iteration of 4X-game.

Here are more ways to play:

  • A duel on a single map, where you can build only one city, but the maximum number of city-states is available

  • Playing without farms

  • Playing as Australia on a world map, needing to achieve a scientific victory before meeting other civilizations

  • 26 civilizations, extra-large map, extended eras, epic speed, technology and cultural discoveries cost eight times more, without wars

  • A game where you can build only one city on each continent

  • Turning an entire continent into a huge national park
